The sun is the bringer of life to our planet. It is also the bringer of sun burn, skin cancer and other ailments. It is, therefore, perhaps strange to talk of the sun in terms of being an effective treatment for psoriasis and eczema.

For centuries, the Dead Sea has been known as a place for sufferers from psoriasis and eczema to come to get relief from the external signs of this chronic disease - dry, flakey skin, lesions, itchiness and more. For years, the proof of the effectiveness of a stay in the area and the use of the water, the mud and the sun were proven to have a long lasting effect on psoriasis. But the reason remained a mystery.

Over the years, more and more researches have been carried out into psoriasis and eczema in an attempt to explain the undeniable effect on psoriasis and eczema that the Dead Sea has.

Whilst extremely high concentrations of therapeutic minerals in the water and mud of the Dead Sea provide some explanation for its therapeutic benefits on psoriasis and other skin diseases, the Dead Sea Research Institute suggests a correlation between the unique nature of the sun’s rays in this, the lowest spot on earth, to recovery from psoriasis.

Being situated at some 400 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea is blessed with an exceptionally thick ozone layer. Research carried out by the Dead Sea Research Institute, under the auspices of Ben Gurion University, produced some interesting results:
• Psoriasis patients exposed only to the Dead Sea sunlight showed an overall improvement in their PASI score of 72%.
• Psoriasis patients who bathed in Dead Sea waters in covered or enclosed facilities showed a 28% improvement in PASI scores.
• Psoriasis patients who were exposed to the sunlight and bathed indoors exhibited an 83% PASI score improvement.

Scientists say that the extra thick layer of ozone over the Dead Sea filters out most of the sun’s harmful UV radiation, leaving behind the therapeutic UV A-wavelength radiation.
Whatever the reason, there can be no doubt that the combination is a winning one that provides months of relief from psoriasis.
