Baby safety monitors?
Baby safety monitors are intercoms or baby devices which allow parents to monitor their baby from a different room. The sounds coming from the baby room are transmitted to the parents' receiver so they can quickly act in case of emergency.
Baby safety monitors usage can be very reassuring for parents. They allow a remote monitoring of their child and alert them when their child is having a nightmare or is waking up. Those intercoms allow parents to keep contact with their baby without waking them up. Intercoms can be used from the very first day the baby is left alone in his or her room. Baby safety monitors consist of a transmitter placed in the baby's room and of a receiver placed in the parents' room.
The prices
The price of a baby safety monitor system depends on the transmission technology used. While basic devices simply transmit and receive the sounds from the baby's bedroom, others will can offer a surveillance infrared video camera that will allow the parents to see what their baby is doing at any time of the day (and night). The size of the device also affects the price of the intercom, the smaller it is, the more expensive it also is. Some newer devices offer high-tech features that may be useful. These features include a warning by vibrating mode of parents' mobile phones. Other recent models also have a silent mode receiver, a light which luminosity will varies with the intensity of the recorded sound.
Small apartment or big house?
Before choosing a device, it is important to identify the special needs and the minimum length of reach the device need to have. The range can be smaller (a few feet or meters) in in the case of a small apartment or much larger in the case of a big house (few hundreds feet or meters). Most devices use a simple technology (radio waves) to communicate. Therefore, the important criteria to consider when purchasing a baby safety monitor is the number of channels available. They more channels your intercom has, the less subject to interference in the neighborhood your intercom will be. The less expensive models have one or two frequencies, while high-end models offer up to 64 different frequencies. In between, a wide range of models offer other options (8, 10, 12 frequencies).
Power
How the device is powered is also a key element. There are three ways to power baby safety monitors : batteries, rechargeable batteries or AC power. Models that are powered on batteries are generally less expensive, but their autonomy is more limited and on the long run, the cost of batteries to power the intercom can become quite expensive! Nonetheless, baby safety monitors have a great advantage, they are extremely portable (just like the rechargeable battery models), so are very easy for parents to bring around. Models that are powered with a rechargeable battery are generally a little more expensive than the basic model, but on the long run, they tend to cost less to maintain. AC models that need to be connected to a power outlet need to remain connected at all time in order to run. While they use during the day can become inconvenient, they are extremely useful at night, because they don't need to be moved around and especially because they can't go low on power.
