For most people, the toolbars that come with Microsoft Office programs have a lot of stuff that no one wants to deal with. Most of it we have no idea how to use, and then we look for something and it never seems to be around. You probably would like to change what’s up there so that you will have access only to the things you want.

Fortunately, Microsoft has made it relatively easy for you to do. In almost every program they have, you’re given the opportunity to not only add and subtract what you don’t want to see in your toolbars, you can move things around and totally eliminate certain toolbars that you might never want to see.

The first thing you do is select the option View. You’ll probably have to hit the arrows for it to show you everything in the menu, but when it does, you’ll see toolbars as one of the options. You slide down to it, then slide to the right so you can see other menu options. Depending on which program you’re in, you’ll either see a bunch of different menu options or just a few.

The first menu options you see will show you what you’re already looking at. They will be checked. You can uncheck them to see what they are; knowing that all you have to do is go back to toolbars to add it again. You can click on all the different toolbars already offered to see what each one does, and then you can keep it or eliminate it again. You need to know that every toolbar you add will take away some of the area of space you can see in your program.

The next thing you can do is just slide down to Customize. This is where you can begin to change your toolbar items around. The first tab will say toolbars, which will give you the same options you’ve already seen, just in a different format. Most programs will automatically default to the second tab.

The second tab is where you’ll spend most of your time. It’s called commands. To the left are all the different command options. Within each command option is where you’ll see icons for all the different things you might want to add. However, your first step should be to eliminate what you don’t want from your toolbars first. All you have to do is bring your mouse to the icons on the toolbar you don’t want, left click, and drag that icon to your menu. It doesn’t matter which command your menu is on; just drag the icon down, and release. It’ll immediately be removed from your toolbar.

Once you’ve done that for all the icons you don’t want, then it’s time for you to select the icons you do want. You have to go through each command on the left to see all the choices on the right that you can select from. When you find what you’re looking for, just left click on it and drag it up to the toolbar you want to see it on. You can put it wherever you want to put it.

That’s pretty much it, except for one last thing. When you close toolbars, if you didn’t remove a lot of icons you might not see everything that was on your toolbar before. When you’re in the toolbar menu, you’ll see everything that’s on your toolbar, but once it’s closed, you might have to hit the arrows over to the far right to see items that didn’t fit there once the menu was closed. You can always go back in and move things around again if you want to.
