The Cabinet War Rooms were designed to be highly secure secret location from where Winston Churchill and his military advisors would plan Britain’s war strategy during the Nazi bombing of London.

Built in the year 1938, the Cabinet War Rooms were heavily used by then British Prime minister Churchill, it is said that Churchill visited the rooms when the war broke out in 1940 and declared that he would conduct Britain’s war effort from here. Engineered as a bunker, the facility was equipped with reinforced steel roof but the War Rooms were still said to be vulnerable to a direct hit.

The Cabinet War Rooms were opened to the public in 1984 but it only encompasses a small area of the original complex that stretched for over three acres and employed more than 500 people at any given time. The complex had facilities of a canteen, a hospital, a shooting range and a dormitory. The centerpiece of the Cabinet War Rooms is the Cabinet Room this was used for meetings by the Prime minister with several high ranking cabinet ministers, war advisers and military generals. The large wooden seat on the far side was occupied by Churchill himself as he presided over high powered meetings that would shape the future course of the world.

The Map room was perhaps the most used room in the whole complex it has functioned ceaselessly since the start of the war until British troops returned home on VJ (Victory over Japan) day. It is said that the rooms has not been changed since it closed down in 1945, the walls of the rooms are adorned with maps of the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles and maps of the Far Eastern theatre of war.
