The answer? ..is a definite No! You can easily begin building muscle at home with a little planning and the right equipment.
I saw incredible results when I spent my first two years building muscle at home using some basic equipment in my basement.
Maybe you cannot stretch your pockets to accommodate a gym membership.
If you are super busy, it will save you time if you can start building muscle at home.
If your body is not where you want it yet, maybe you're too embarrassed or uncomfortable to train in a regular gym.
In any case, do not worry, if you want to train at home, go right ahead!
Right now, I workout at a gym with a training partner, but I have to say that the years that I spent building muscle at home were fantastic.
There was no worry about wasting time commuting to and from the gym. Whenever I wanted, I could just step downstairs and start building muscle at home as all of my equipment was right there waiting for me.
I could listen to whatever I felt like and not have to worry about anyone else at the gym.
I could grunt, yelp and scream through my sets if I was in the mood without disturbing anyone (hey, squatting to failure is definitely not the easiest thing ) or train shirtless if I felt like it.
Once I was finished, I knew that my post workout shakes were just a few steps away, so I could collapse on the floor in exhaustion with the happiness of not having to make the drive home.

Ultimately, the only real disadvantage you will face is that you will not be able to access certain muscle building equipments such as calf or leg press machine.
You can purchase certain machines if you have the money to spend and plan on building muscle at home over the long term, but for most people, this is not the most likely scenario.
The best part is that planning out a proper bodybuilding routine does not mean that you will need a bunch of fancy equipment, and all of the machine exercises that you would regularly perform can be swapped for free-weight exercises when building muscle at home.

You will want to get a cast iron set and enough weights so that you can continually progress from week to week.
This is much smarter than getting an entire set of dumbbells. Get a single set that includes both the barbell and dumbbells together.
Obtaining a sturdy bench is a must for doing bench presses and other seated movements. Since you will most likely be training alone, you will need to purchase a bench that can be set on an incline and that also contains safety catches.
Typically under twenty bucks, these can be placed inside of a door frame.
A full squat rack can be pricey, so it is typically the trickiest piece of equipment to purchase. But the fact remains that squats are an irreplaceable movement and have to be a part of your workout routine, especially if you don't have a leg press machine handy.
If you just cannot afford it, you’ll have to look at other options. For safety, when building muscle at home it is critical to have some sort of apparatus that enables you to unrack a loaded bar and drop it safely if your strength gives out during the lift.
You should not be squatting if you don not have a place where you can safely drop the bar while building muscle at home! You can kill two birds with one stone if you decide to get a squat rack, as full squat racks typically provide a chin-up bar on top.
There are the five pieces of basic equipment that you need to set up a home gym. Joining a gym is not necessary as long as you have these basic tools in your arsenal to perform an equally effective workout.
