It's fairly normal to experience a little anxiety and depression after a heavy night out drinking. It's ironic that people young and old, drink alcohol to have fun since alcohol is in fact a depressant. It's estimated that 30% of teens binge drink at least twice a month. A lot of people like to have a drink at the end of the week to help unwind. Some people however have different reasons for drinking. In social situations they will try and avoid standing out and interacting. Alcohol is often relied on at social gatherings by sufferers in an effort to cover their anxiety. However, alcohol can actually increase panic attacks because it depresses the nervous system.

They may drink more to try and counter feelings of anxiety or just because they feel reckless. They might experience erratic mood swings and a loss of control. The next morning they feel hung-over, experiencing headaches, shaking, sweating, muscle ache.

It's also common to experience anxiety and depression. They might feel irritable, unable to concentrate and have depressing thoughts about their life. For them, drinking seems like a good idea to wash away their fears and anxieties. As they drink more they become more dependent and tolerant of alcohol.

This cycle of binge drinking to counter feelings of anxiety and depression does not end unless the sufferer can put a stop to drinking. Anxiety disorder sufferers who have become reliant on alcohol find it extremely hard to quit. In most cases, cutting out drink completely has to be done in order to treat anxiety.

Anxiety and depression makes life very difficult to bear and erase any hope of a positive future. Reasons for drinking include a means to numb their feelings of anxiety and depression. Also binging serves as a means to inflict damage on oneself.

This kind of self destructive behavior can lead to other health issues and even suicide. Others might also take drugs as a means to escape from their problems. Initially, this might seem like a good idea to some but in the long run, anxiety and depression worsens.

It's best to stay away from alcohol when suffering from anxiety and depression. Alcohol changes brain chemistry and makes treating anxiety and depressive disorders harder to treat. Treatment and therapy can be highly effective but in some patients it might require a little more patience.
