Before you even think of taking your brand new boat out for a trip on the ocean it is in your own best interest to study a boat safety course and have a boat safety inspection to look for the required safety devices. The US Coast Guard can give you with a list of required and suggested boat safety devices.
Life jackets, or personal drifting tools as they are formally called, should be easily available for each occupant of the vessel. They should also be adjusted to the size of the individual who is meant to wear them in case of an emergency. They should be in good working condition including all the straps and clips in place and operational. It is a great idea to have them fitted to the individuals so that if needed they can be worn without much further adjusting. In some states there is a minimum age for which the wear of a life jacket is obligated every time.
As a large part of boating safety there should also be present on board a recently inspected fire extinguisher. It should be clearly labelled so that anybody can spot it if necessary and reach for it quickly. There are varied kinds of fire extinguishers, created to extinguish different types of fires. For boating safety it is advisable to obtain a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are created for putting out fires started or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.
As a final part of boating safety, particularly for vessels with gasoline engines and specifically when the engine is mounted in the vessel, proper ventilation is vital.
Not only to avoid any build up of carbon monoxide, threatening the crew with poisoning, but also to avoid gasoline fumes from building up and turning into a serious fire hazard.
