When a child has its birthday, it is a far more important day than us adults can imagine. With some good planning it is easy to make it a perfect birthday with presents they will love and use as often as possible.
Depending on the age of the birthday kid, there are quite a few different ways to go about the celebrations. As a rule of thumb older children have higher expectations and more often than not they want a birthday party. Younger children may only need a few presents to be happy enough, but even small children deserve a party.
The size of the party is of course dependent on the size of the house, economy and number of friends they wish to invite, but even the smallest party is better than none. If your kid has too many friends to fit in the house, there is always the option of renting a place to host it. Many restaurants offer birthday parties to be hosted there, with special menus and at times entertainment for the children. If you live in the country, why not host the party in a barn or such; totally free from expensive things to break.
If you are planning to have the party at your own home, make sure to remove fragile valuables and furniture before the guests arrive. Nothing makes a party go stale as breaking an appreciated heirloom. If and accident happens and something does break, remember not to blame the children, it is not their fault.
Inviting adult friends and relatives to the birthday party is of course optional, but remember it can get fairly crowded if everyone will come. It might be better to have two parties; one for the kid’s friends from school or kindergarten and one for relatives and friends of the family. As a nice side effect, the kid will have two birthday parties to cheer over.
Although the party aspect of the celebrations is important, it comes second to the gifts and presents. All kids love presents, it is unlikely your child would be different. What to get is harder; as a parent you often want to buy useful presents you know he or she needs, but make sure you don’t buy boring gifts. What you see as useful many kids will frown upon, so take the opportunity to buy a totally useless toy instead of fancy clothes or other grown up stuff.
No matter what you are planning, make sure to involve the child beforehand. Of course there should be some form of surprise involved, but remember that children grow in a much faster pace than we can expect, making it likely us adults will miss what is hip and what is kid stuff. Getting a clown as entertainment for a twelve year old can certainly be a success, but it is far more likely you will embarrass your child in front of his friends. The same applies to food and beverages; make sure you ask your child what he/she wants and be very sure to check the guests for allergies if you serve anything unusual.
Letting the child take part in the planning is always a good thing, making the chance of success much greater. A little surprise or two won’t hurt, but make sure to think it over a few times before you plan them.
