When you get into your car, you are taking your life in your hands – especially if you have to deal with people like I do. Some people just don’t understand how driving works and contribute to many of my pet peeves. Here are three more that may also rile up your blood.
1. The four-way stop sign. If you have ever been to a four-way stop sign, you know what I’m about to refer to. If two people arrive at the exact same moment (which happens more often than you might think) they usually end up sitting and waiting for the other to make a move. This sort of action only becomes worse if more than two people show up. If four cars come to a rest at the exact same moment, it’s like all of their brains just explode immediately. No one seems capable of figuring out how to proceed. Here’s a tip. Just wave one person through. Once that is over, make a move and be on your way. If you want to get real technical, the driver to the right has the right of way, but if everyone stops at the same time, then who’s to say who goes first? If all else fails, just be the one to get the party started and make your move first.
2. Not using cruise control. This drives me nuts. Listen, if you are on the highway, and you can move at a constant speed for a long time, use your damn cruise control. If I am using my cruise control and I pass you, only to have you pass me 10 minutes later, that is poor driving. If you then pull into the slow lane and start to go slower than me and I have to re-pass you, then you will most likely be seeing a finger in your direction. I can sort of, but not really, understand if you drive a car that isn’t equipped with cruise, but almost every car on sale today, or for the past 20 years, has had cruise. Please, for the love of me and all that I stand for, use the cruise control that was installed on your car. Plus it can even save you gas if you use it correctly.
3. Over brakers. These are people who feel the need to brake whenever and
wherever they feel like it. Cars a quarter of a mile off starting to stop? Why not apply the brakes? Can’t stand driving at a constant speed? How about applying the brakes? Coming up to a stoplight that is green and has been green for a long time and will continue to be green long after you have passed under it and are gone from the face of the earth never to be heard from or seen or even thought of again?! Yup, apply the brakes. Why must this be so? Seriously, the brake pedal is not meant to be overused like that. If you are constantly stepping on it, it can break off (ok so that might be a lie). But really, it is extremely annoying to everyone behind, means that I have to be constantly focusing on your tail lights and just means that you are going to have to be purchasing new pads and rotors sooner than everyone else.
