Most people suffer from some kind of anxiety disorders. Anxiety is not just a stress related disorder, as it includes panic attacks, phobias, social anxiety disorder, and general anxiety. People describe anxiety disorders as tension, apprehension, nervousness, and worry. In most cases, the source of anxiety is known. Symptoms may vary from person-to-person and are normally - difficulty in breathing, rapid pulse, chest pain, headache and cold sweat, where as dizzy spells and abdominal pain is possible as well.
So, what role can massage play in anxiety? Massage has a soothing ability to foster relaxation and relieve tension. It helps to lower muscle tension, improves breathing, and reduces the level of cortisol, a stress hormone. Massage also helps improve our immune system. Studies suggest that massage, if done by a trained masseur, can in the long run reduce the intake of anti-anxiety medicine.
I am now going to discuss three simple massage techniques that can do wonders in an anxiety disorder:
1. In case of a panic attack, simple hand contact with the person can ease the feeling. All that you need to do in this case is to hold the ankles of a person with a broad and solid contact and do the same by holding the wrists. A broad contact on the chest, belly or even on the head can relax the person. I prefer to hold the ankles because it seems to have the most grounding effect.
2. Stress often leads to throbbing headaches. In such cases head massage with warm oil, or relaxing scalp massage can have the most positive impact.
3. Relaxing belly massage is the third technique. In my experience, simple belly rubs can reduce nervousness and help during anxiety situations such as school presentations, or job interview.
Another important aspect to watch in a person with anxiety is the changes in posture. These changes symbolize protection from anxiety. For example, hunched back with forward shoulders, or a collapsed chest is a way to protects heart and lungs. Shrugged shoulders seem to protect our neck.
The most important thing in a massage is its consistency. A single session is not enough to turn the tables and regular massage sessions are a must. In addition, it has to be combined with a balanced diet. You should stay away from nicotine, coffee and recreational drugs. Try to learn relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation and have a regular exercise program. Having enough sleep is also very important because there are many things that can cause anxiety. But, above all, definitely seek advice from a medical practitioner if you think you suffer from an anxiety disorder.
