The very last thing that you want to look at, when you open your monthly statement, is a list of the charges that the bank has dealt you, for going over your overdraft limit, or bouncing a cheque. People are put in situations sometimes, where a bank charge triggers an overdraft, and causes even more charges, which is ridiculous. Certain people have really bad financial difficulties, and are constantly swimming against the tide of monetary crisis, which does not precipitate change for them. Such situations devastate. People, over a space of time, can find themselves owing out thousands, and all from one bank charge.

Something that has come about since people started to become aware that they could claim back their bank charges, are companies that will go through the whole process on your behalf, for a fee which is usually around 15-20% of the overall amount that is recompensed. What these claims companies are reliant upon is the fact that banks are only actually legally allowed to charge customers the amount that it has actually cost them when something interrupts the running of a bank account. They are not actually meant to be making any sort of profit from these charges. So if you were to consider that an overdraft letter is something that the bank charges approximately £30,00 for, and the letter actually costs £5,00 to generate, then something is going drastically wrong somewhere along the line. As the consumers have began to fight back in recent years though, it is nice to kno0w that six years worth of charges can be claimed back by all.

A report that was carried out recently by the consumer group Which? Showed that 85% of people that made claims to their bank were successful in receiving either part or all of their money back. It is also the case that the Financial Services Ombudsman should be contacted if there is any sort of dispute, and they can usually swing things in the favour of the consumer. The report also claims that lots of people do not claim because they do not want to create animosity between themselves and the company that they bank with. There was a report of someone being told their account was going to be shut down, subsequent to them being awarded £200.00 in charges recompense. It all ended well though, because the bank was made to give the customer an extra £1000.00, and they had to reinstate the person’s account. No bank has, as of yet, asked the high court to judge whether or not the charges are fair, and they are just compensating anyone that comes forth with a request for compensation. They are just hoping that a large percentage of people will not.

If you have managed to incur a substantial amount of debt by way of borrowing, then the chances are that part of that debt is the amount that you have had to pay in bank charges. If you have been severely dealt with by your bank, then possibly thousands of pounds worth of your debt has been accumulated through debt. Realise that you can still claim back your charges, even if you are no longer with the institution that has charged you too much. Much too much.
