An exemplary female doctor achieved her state through a roundabout route, following a calling to serve even if she was known to take some time out to accommodate the odd party. But back when she was a high school student, single mindedness was not one of her traits. Then, studying at a local high school, this lady's mind was divided between medicine and linguistics as possible career paths. She took in all she could as she hedged her bets ? from Spanish, French and English to all the sciences. Even as she had excellent communication prowess, she still looked on to her Spanish teacher in making her final decision. The teacher responded by saying that while she can be a doctor who happens to be a language expert, she cannot be a physician on the side.
She was greeted by nothing but science subjects as her A-level studies when she went to the local community college. She was undeterred even after two years she found the results to be discouraging. Her favorite subject matter was Chemistry and this was the only area she passed.
Through the back door of the university which is Natural Sciences, she entered so that she can take medicine the next year. While she did have a lot of good times, she did not perform well so transferring would be hard. She rarely got A's for they were mostly B's. She adamantly vowed to complete this degree thanks to her growing love for chemistry as well as this reason.
As she love chemistry even more, chemistry and food technology became her majors. It was in this field that she got her honors degree. After she had graduated, she couldn't land a job. There was simply no work for her the first year she was out of university. Jobs weren't that easy to find. She traveled the food industry to find a job. While in front of discouragement, she'd ask why she ever allowed herself to get into this.
There was only one person, a drug dealer, who was able to offer her a job and he offered her something tempting as he saw her capability in using industrial kettles. She decided to turn it down for it did not tempt her one bit even if the money being offered to her was a huge sum for she was not brought up to think that money is god. She continued to apply to medical school, refusing also to give up the dream of practicing medicine. As she still did not heard from medical school, she was offered a teaching job which she accepted with trepidation.
After a year, she decided that she needed money for medical soon if she gets an acceptance, and so from the classroom, she went to a commercial bank as a trainee manager. She goes back to the time when she weighed out the pros and cons then even went to talk to different people and they all figured that if she would just opt to stay with the bank, she will remain an employee. Only medicine can offer her a business of her own while she toils on what she loves.
She finally joined medical school after two years. The first year, in the usual tradition, was a mixture of fun and learning. Immersing herself was something she did. Being a bookworm was not one of her characteristics but she studies and partied enough. Only in her first year, she already bagged awards in community health as well as distinction in being among the top 10 in Physiology. She connected with many people with community medicine and so she admired this so much. You get to know how the lives of your patients went as you enter the homes. She thought that the program was brilliant.
She states that cutting up corpses won't trigger any emotional losses inside her but perhaps just some feelings of disgust. But a different story enters in Pathology. When they had to do autopsies on the recently dead, she'd spent the whole 10 weeks crying. Emotional loss inside her was triggered by the deaths. With her strong background in chemistry, she learned to appreciate pharmacology. The function of chemicals in the body especially in addressing diseases truly fascinated her. She often goes to the library now for some journals even if she didn't do this before. With an honor in Pharmacology, everyone got shocked.
No longer trying to become a bookworm, she and her five study partners have gained the status of total party organizers. They all did well in their finals, in fact, three of them got honours. One person from her group scored tons of honors including a medal in gynecology. After all, we can say that our time was never wasted.
