You strive to be the best you can be. You want everything to go smoothly and according to the plans you have prepared for yourself. But although life is good, it is not always fair. Sometimes, a lot of bad stuff and misfortune and tragedy can barge into the perfect life we thought we had.

Here’s the problem: you cannot control outside circumstances that force themselves into your world. If you could, we would all become gods in our own little ideal world, and we wouldn’t need to be reading articles like this one on how to deal with unexpected challenges.

You cannot control external forces closing in on you, but what you can control is your attitude and how you will respond. Negative things happen, but that doesn’t mean you have to react negatively in return.

When you change the way you look at the world, the world you look at will change. How you see the world directly affects your experience of living. By making the necessary mental and emotional adjustments, you can see new opportunities, even when things do not go according to plan or when troubles occur.

Here are some suggestions to start you on your journey to a more positive attitude. And remember that having the right support like friends, family or a great life coach are key to success, especially when dealing with a particularly challenging struggle. Consider the following tips I learned from a personal life coach:

Take full ownership of your life. You are solely responsible for your thoughts and actions. Take the time and effort to invest in yourself to create positive changes in your life.

Condition your mind to accept only positive but realistic thoughts. What we feed our brains will result in its degree of performance. If you fill your head and heart with negative thoughts and emotions, it is very difficult to maintain a positive attitude. Devote a daily time to thinking about positive thoughts, stories, and inspirational ideas/phrases. It is the food your heart and mind need to be healthy.

Choose your words carefully. Words like “always, never, I have to, I must, etc.” place in your brain the concept of not being in control, meaning that other people or circumstances are in charge of how you should react. Instead, choose to speak with words confirming your ability to choose: I want, I choose, I will.

Associate yourself with people who believe in you and support you. That’s not the same as people who just flatter you and agree with anything you say. Those are fake people. What you are looking for are people who truly have a positive outlook on life.

Having a positive mental attitude is highly contagious. Just remember that in order to attract positive people in your life, you have to become an attractor by developing and maintaining a positive mental attitude.
