One of the benefits of being aware of your thoughts is that you can use them to your convenience, and project the thoughts that will bring you from good health to a positive attitude.

Today I'll show you a technique of directing your thoughts to enter a peaceful sleep. It is very useful in times of change or turbulence in your life, specially when thinking about it all makes you lie awake in bed.

The result of this technique is the temporal suspension of all thoughts about the problems you may have, leaving them in a sort of 'stand-by' mode.

-Identify those areas of your life that are challenging and may make you worry or feel negative. For example, when I was a teenager I used to name my studies, my family and my car. Attach an image to every area (following the previous example, I would think of the building of the university, my parents and brother, and my car).

-Imagine a large room with a number of chairs or stands, like an exhibition room. Place each of the images that represent troubled areas of your life on a chair or a stand. Release all your feelings about it when you put the image on the stand.

-Imagine a door out of the room, and see yourself opening it. Behind it is your favourite landscape: a beach, a wood, perhaps a hill. Close the door behind you. You have just left behind all your worries and are entering a place of calm and peace.

In this peaceful, relaxed visualization, you can choose to 'look' at the landscape you're in and enjoy it as if you were there, while you drift off to sleep.

This technique has helped me greatly to relax during stressful times, when I lied awake for hours, bothered by worries, and unable to sleep. In fact, it can be used whenever you are stressed, to give yourself a break.

It all starts in our thoughts.
