You have options when it comes to getting yourself out of debt, but not everybody wants to hire a service, a financial adviser, or go through credit counseling. There is a way that you can put together a plan to manage your debts yourself and get out from under your bills without the help of anybody, but yourself. You will have to be disciplined and set up a good plan to get you there, however.

The first step is to get a copy of your credit report and make a list of all your debts and bills. This list needs to have all the debts that you are still current on and have never made a late payment on listed on one sheet of paper. Then, list all the bad debts that you don't pay on or have been late with on another sheet of paper. The last sheet of paper will be all your bills that have to be paid that are not on your credit report.

The second step in creating a plan to manage your debts is to list all the bad debts from the smallest balance to the largest balance. Since these debts are already bad and you have already been late on them you are going to concentrate on one at a time until it is paid off, starting with the smallest one.

The last step is to set up a monthly budget and see how much you can afford to pay towards your debts each month. You want to always include some money for emergency savings and some money for your own entertainment. This is important and you need to make sure you do not forget about any bills that are not paid each week or month like oil changes and license plate fees.
