Situated to the west of the Ramblas, the Barri Gotic area (or the Gothic Quarter) holds evidence of Barcelona's brush with Roman history. The remnants of an ancient Roman village can still be seen at various sites in the area. Due to continuous development, one is likely to find a sophisticated mix of both modern and ancient buildings standing side by side throughout the Barri Gotic area.
Those interested in learning more about the history of the area are welcome to visit the various museums that showcase various aspects of Barcelona's past. Some of the most popular museums include the Museu Frederic Marés, the Museu de la Historia de la Ciudad, and the Museu Picasso.
The Gothic Quarter displays its European roots with its narrow, long, winding streets and assortment of peaceful squares, making it ideal for innumerable Kodak moments. The medieval flavour of the environs, as seen in the architecture and style of stores and boutiques, make it even more unique.
One of the most popular attractions in the area is the large centrally located cathedral with its picturesque courtyard. Visitors to the cathedral complex can walk among a wide assortment of plants and trees and watch the geese that move around the courtyard. The Moors had knocked down the original cathedral; the one that stands in its place today was reconstructed over several centuries and showcases both Renaissance and Gothic designs.
The restaurants and bars are seemingly constantly full and are in no short supply in the Placa Reial section of the Barri Gotic. The area comes alive at night with music, drinks, and dancing. One of the best places to find bars and cafes is the Calle Feran, near the Placa Reial. Shoppers will have a great deal to be excited about as they stroll through the Calle Portal de L'Angel and find bargains in little boutiques that pepper the Calle Avinyó.
Although walking is the best way to get around the city since the Gothic Quarter's central location puts everything within close range, there are 3 metro stops in the area to assist those who would prefer to get from one point to another in as little time as possible. This option is best suited to those who have difficulty walking for extended periods and for those who are only in the area for a few days and wish to see as much of it as possible in the least amount of time.
