Now before delving into all the advantages of RSS (well seven of them at this point)it probably is best to just elaborate on what RSS actually is. I would be silly to consider everyone knows and you can’t really value it and what it has to offer if you are not sure specifically what it is.
I am sure you have seen on all the different sites you go to an icon, usually orange in colour with the three letters RSS. Now what are RSS is really simple, its Really Simple Syndication, which is easy to remember and it does exactly what it says. This feeder syndicates or to put it another way, reproduces an article or content every time a site is updated and notifies subscribers each time it happens.
With an RSS on a site updates about the site that occur can be syndicated out to all those you subscribe to it. These updates can be simple one liners, paragraphs, include pictures, descriptions you can actually use whatever method or piece of information you want to let people know that the site has been improved or updated.Let's expand for a minute, what an RSS does is tell you new content has been added and that content can be anything, pictures, posts, articles, videos , threads, whatever. The point is it tells you the title of the update, gives you a brief description (how brief is up to the web master) and you have the choice through your RSS feeder whether to look at the content now or later.
OK now that we have touched on what an RSS really is, what are the benefits of using it?
All who have access to RSS benefit be it the publisher of the content or the reader.
1. As I have already mentioned, you receive site updates whenever changes are made.
Envision for a second you subscribe to my RSS feed. Now if I really want to provide customer service I can update you on tips, hints, suggestions for whatever I am providing; maybe dog training, or growing certain types of roses, wine tasting, computer software, whatever. What I am saying is, due to the RSS I am constructing a relationship with you and if I was to decide to create a new product and wanted to test it or offer it to a select few for a discount, then you will be the first to hear about it.
Now if you are a publisher you want to get your feeds out to as many RSS feed sites as you can, Using something like Magic Submitter to do it automatically for you saves you a load of time.
2. It saves you from having to go through websites all the time.
An RSS gives you a summary of the main content so you actually get to choose whether if it is worth looking at so you get to make a decision which sites to look at rather than having to waste time discovering the fact..
3. You are contolling you subscription to the RSS.
Just because you subscribe to a site doesn’t mean you are stuck with it. You can change your subscriptions as and when you want. Get bored of a site; not receiving excellent content anymore then change it. You are in control.
4. You don’t have to worry about endless emails coming to your inbox. That just doesn’t happen.
Yes you have to give an email address to subscribe at the beginning but but as you subscribe to what is called an aggregator to read your feeds, you don’t receive updates in your email box.
5. Because you are not using an eamil account to receive updates it is therefore spam free.
I am sure you have had the problem like so many of us of regularly recieving spam. Well you wont get spam in your email account because as mentioned in point four your not using your email account, so RSS feeds are so much safer and more hassle free than email..
6. Cutting free of an RSS is so easy.
If you want to unsubscribe from an email list sometimes you have to jump through hoops, giving reasons why you want to unsubscribe etc. With RSS you simply delete the feed, no questions.
7. With an RSS you have a fast way of getting marketing messages out to targeted readers.
One way RSS benefits both provider and subscriber is through marketing. As a provider you will be looking to build a relationship with your subscribers and if done properly then you can tell them about any new products or service through your RSS feed. There is one thing you can do as a publisher and that is to get your feed out to RSS Feed Directories through using software like Magic Submitter. As a subscriber you get to choose if the product you are being told about is worth looking more into, or you can simply ignore it.
Now you have seven reasons why RSS is certainly worth using and the ease behind it will certainly make your life so much easier than it is now
