Do you sometimes find yourself reminiscing to the good old days, when you could simply use the internet to find a solution, without being sold everything under the sun?

What is the best way to know that you're buying a legitimate offer instead of falling for a scam? This is my checklist to know whether an internet marketing product is legitimate or a scam.

1. Look for reviews
Reviews are a great way to compare products and check out what other people have to say. Despite many review sites making affiliate commissions, the reviews are often helpful and authentic - the good, the bad and the ugly! An even better option would be to find a website that has several reviews and ratings systems from more than just one reviewer.

2. Check whether the seller complies with the updated FTC rules
Not long ago, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States has changed its rules regarding affiliate incomes online. Everyone that makes an income online needs to comply with these two rules. To start with they need to tell you if they're making money by recommending a product. If someone is making a cut of the profits, they need to tell you. Secondly, they should talk about the average results people get from their products, rather than mentioning only the one stellar student from three years ago. If the product you're researching complies with these rules, it's a great start.

3. Look whether you can contact the seller
One of my definite checks to see whether an offer is an internet marketing scam, is to check whether my inquiries are answered and whether the seller is reasonably contactable. If they get back to me and are open and honest about their offer, then I'm happy.

4. Look for a guarantee
A guarantee is always a great way to find out whether a product suits you or not. Whether it's a guarantee or a free trial, just make sure you know how long you have to check the product out and that the customer service will be able to refund your money when required

5. Make sure you don't get caught up in recurring payments without knowing how to get out
There is a lot of talk about internet marketing scams that involve free trial offers or recurring payments, that are difficult to get out of. These can be very hard to get rid off. When choosing an internet marketing product that requires a recurring membership payment, make sure there are instructions on how to resign from your membership if you want.
