More than 13 million people use Tumblr to host their blogs and for many of their blogging needs. With so many people blogging about and sharing so many things in the same place and so many blogs out there in similar niches, how can a newcomer stand out? While it may not be easy to create, design, and garner attention to your blog, it is certainly not impossible. Here are 3 ways to benefit from and make the most out of your Tumblr.
1. Customize Your Tumblr Blog (The Right Way)
Customization is the first thing most people want to do when starting a blog, and Tumblr users are no exception. It's very easy to overdo it. There are a million examples of gaudy, harsh-looking blogs on the Internet, so don't be tempted to add to the mess. Choose a simple, clean layout and move on. Your readers will thank you. After all, the content is the most important thing, isn't it? A quick Google search will point you in the right direction.
2. Follow (And Get People To Follow You)
Just like Twitter, Tumblr places a heavy emphasis on the idea of following other users. Unlike Twitter, however, who you follow (and who follows you) on Tumblr can make all the difference. Luckily, Tumblr features a fantastic search function, allowing you to find users with content that's relevant to your interests. Try searching for hash-tags that relate to the things you like to blog about. Don't forget to tag your own posts so that users can find you. Having followers that care about your interests is a great conversation starter, and great conversation makes for a well-read blog. Very often, the comments are just as interesting as the posts that inspire them.
3. Using the Queue For Consistency
Millions of blogs are started and abandoned every year. In order to avoid that horrible fate, you need to update on a consistent basis. This can get overwhelming pretty quickly. Tumblr has a great workaround for people who aren't always inspired: the queue. If you're feeling particularly creative, you can make a bunch of posts in a short period of time. However, overloading your Tumblr with more than a post or two at a time can minimize the impact of the individual posts. The queue allows you to save these posts and only upload them to Tumblr at a time of your choosing, say, every day at 4 pm. Then it becomes a simple matter of filling the queue from time to time, instead of the usual "I don't post enough" shame spiral.
