I started out in the business world, in financial analysis. And I could never get over what our company was paying "manufacturers reps" for promoting our products. Seemed like we did all the dirty work, and tehy got all the glory - and big commissions, for telling other people about our products.

Today on the internet, the same thing is happening all over again. Thousands and thousands of companies have prouct they'd love to sell to the masses - and they need you and me to make the connection between their product and the consumer. When we do that for them, they pay us a commission. That's affiliate marketing.

On the internet, affiliate marketing is an arrangement between an online merchant and affiliate, in which the affiliate earns a commission for generating sales, leads and/or clicks for the merchant's web site.

Affiliate marketing works as a win-win situation for both the merchant and the affiliate. The merchant gains opportunities to advertise his products for free to a larger market which will increase his sales. The more hard-working affiliates he gets, the more sales he can expect. By getting affiliates to market his products and services, he is saving himself time, effort and money in looking for possible markets and customers.

When a client clicks on the link in the affiliate website and takes a certain action (like buying the product), the merchant makes a sale and pays a commission to the affiliate. And, the affiliate marketer benefits from each customer who clicks on the link in his website and who actually purchases the product or avails of the service provided by the merchant. Usually the affiliate gets commission per sale, which can be fixed percentage or fixed amount. Usually there's no cost to join an affiliate program, but some are more selective than others.

If you want to be an affiliate marketer and make money online, you'll want to follow these three basic steps to start your effective affiliate marketing campaign.

First, identify a particular niche you are interested in or passionate about so you won’t be bored and forced to develop your affiliate web site later on. Focusing on a specific area you know well will make things a LOT easier for you. Here's a few resources to get your thought process started: ClickBank.com (select 'Marketplace'); AssociatePrograms.com; LinkShare.com and CJ.com. There are literally hundreds of other networks available to hook you up with a product creator, but this will give you a good start.

Secondl, look for merchants who pay well and whose products sell well. With a little research, this is actually pretty easy to do. It's a good idea to make sue the product owner gives you marketing materials such as articles, text links, banner ads, classified ads, and maybe some free reports. Once you've made your selections, you'll want to determine how to promote these products. You can do this in a number of ways, including building your own website or sending visitors direct to the product owner. There's a lot to learn in this area - much more than we have room for here. But there are lots of resources where you can learn more.

Third, no matter how you decide to promote someone's product or service, the hard part is getting a good stream of targeted traffic to your site or links. You can buy mobs of traffic, but don't. It's junk. Your traffic MUST be targeted in some way, so that they've expressed interest in the type of product you're promoting.

Assuming the offer being presented by the product owner is good (it converts a decent percentage of visitors to sales), if you get some good, targeted traffic, you'll have a nice little income stream that just keeps on giving.

Promoting products is a whole separate topic, so we'll talk about that in a different article. Remember, for 99.9% of online business hopefuls, there is no quick path to success. Affiliate marketing is very tempting, because a lot of people succeed at it. But it is hard work and requires a lot of persistence. It's nice that you don't have to worry about inventory, transaction processing, customer serivce, product returns and the like. But that doesn't make it any easier! You've GOT to have a system in place that enables you to automate a lot of the mundane tasks, so you can stay focused on what's important for your business.

Most affiliate marketers don’t understand this, so when they don’t make sales, they quit, look for other programs and carry on the same mistake. After a while, they said that affiliate marketing is just one of those scams in the Internet. Look - if you stay focused (which is a MAJOR problem for most marketers), you can work your way to great success if you use the right strategies in affiliate marketing. You can make money as an affiliate marketer if you're willing to do what it takes.
