Maybe you just got laid off or fear that you might be laid off. Mack Michaels is a guy who established himself as a great asset, a great employee of a very stable company in a very short time. He had a lot of success moving up the corporate ladder. He associated with the people at work and socialized with work friends and school friends after hours. He enjoyed his job a lot and was able to afford nice things for his wife who was able to stay at home with their only child. Things were good all around and more than he ever expected to achieve.
One day Mack went to work as usual and found a box of his stuff on his desk with a note to see his boss. Well Mack didn’t think anything negative about the situation because the company was building out new offices and moving the higher ups into those new offices. He naturally would be one of those people moving up.
He went to see his boss and when he opened the door, his boss was not smiling. The boss said that he had to let him know that today was his last day with the company, and that his job had been outsourced to save the company money. This whole scenario hit Mack very hard in the gut and came as a total shock and surprise. He had planned his whole life around the stability and pleasure of working in this job and for this particular company.
Because of his income Mack was living a great life. Now Mack had to figure out what happened and what to do about it. What was he going to do? The door to his beloved company had been completely shut and locked up tight.
He didn’t know what he was going to do but Mack knew that he never wanted to face this same situation again, the situation of having the rug pulled out from under him. Now Mack didn’t have his dream job and his finances reflected how most of us spend our money. He spent what he had made, so he was running on empty. After much thought he had the clarity of mind to sit down and write 2 personal lists:
What I don’t want in a job:
1. I don’t want a boss to tell me what to do.
