Your body was built for movement. That is the way your body keeps healthy and in shape. In order to increase your metabolic rate, you need to exercise. If you are not exercising now, you need to start and if you're currently exercising, increase your exercise routine.

I have to tell you that I don't really enjoy exercise all that much. But, I do love to be active. Especially after sitting at a desk all day. I need to get out and move my body. Some of the ways I do this are biking with my dog, kayaking on the lake, walking dogs at the local shelter (can you tell I'm a dog nut?), and hiking with my dogs.

The solution to exercising is to find something you love to do and do it. When you think about it, our ancestors didn't have an exercise routine but they did move. The more vigorous the activity the better but any increase in movement over nothing at all will do wonders for your body and also for your outlook and mental health.

There are many activities that you can do that can make a difference. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has many suggestions on what you can do to increase your daily activity level. Listed below are just a few of them.

 Take a walk or do desk exercises instead of a cigarette or coffee break.  Keep a pair of comfortable walking or running shoes in your car and office.  Swim with your kids.  Get a dog and walk it.  Go for a half-hour walk instead of watching TV.  Park farther from your destination and walk.  Walk to a co-worker's desk instead of emailing or calling them.  Perform gardening or home repair activities.  Avoid laborsaving devices.  Dance to music.

I'm sure you can come up with other ideas as you start to keep in mind ways to add more activity to your daily life.
