Constructed in the walled city of old Delhi by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, this massive fort is a monument of historical and political significance. Originally referred as Quila-i-Mubarak, Red Fort took long ten years (1638 to 1648) to complete its construction.
Since from the reign of Shah Jahan, till date Red Fort has maintained its importance in Indian politics. Every year on the occasion of Independence day (15th August) and Republic Day (26th January), both Prime Minister and President of our country addresses the entire nation from Red Fort only.
This surviving relic of Delhi's glorious past is one of the best spot for sight seeing in India. As the name suggest, Red fort is a monument entirely built of red sand stone. This prime attraction of medieval city of Shahjahanabad, covers a semi-octagonal area of almost 2km. The longest wall of the fort faces the town in the west and Yamuna river in the east.
Red Fort's art work displays a fine blend of Persian, European and Indian art. The walls of this fort are smoothly dressed and decorated by heavy string courses along the upper section. To enter this formidable fort, you can use either of Delhi Gate or Lahore Gate, a three storey huge gate.
This impressive structure of India was once the residence of royal family and encompasses some beautiful monuments within its boundary. Diwan-i-Aam, Nahr-i-Behisht, Zenana, Moti Masjid, and an exhilarating garden named Hayat Bakhsh Bagh are some of the main charms of Red Fort.
Thanks to its architectural brilliance, in the year 2007, UNESCO has awarded Red Fort with its prestigious title of World Heritage Site. And, so to enhance its beauty and woo more number of tourists Delhi Tourism, every evening organizes fantastic light and sound show. These shows mainly exhibits the glorious history of Red Fort.
